Historical M&A Transactions
In 2017, US M&A deal volume is expected to reach its highest level since its last cyclical peak in 2007. However, total closed M&A deals, measured in $ value, are projected to drop year over year, which signals that the market is experiencing fewer “mega-deals” in 2017. Factset Flashwire confirmed this in its July publication. For $1Bn+ transactions, the number of closed deals over the last 12 months increased 17.5% year over year ending June 30th, but the aggregate transaction value for $1Bn+ M&A market declined 7.7%. The graph below displays the large rise in closed deal volume over the last 30 years.

Looking closely at the US Healthcare, Consumer Discretionary, IT, Industrials and Materials industries, Q2 2017 saw a total of 844 successfully closed M&A transactions nationwide, totaling just over $60Bn in disclosed deal volume. In the US, the IT sector led the way with 432 announced and 326 closed M&A transactions, totaling $11.7Bn in disclosed deal volume.

In the Carolinas, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi, Q2 2017 saw a total of 123 successfully closed M&A transactions within these industries, totaling close to $1Bn in disclosed deal volume. Following the nationwide trend, in the Southeast, the IT sector led the way with 44 announced and 37 closed M&A transactions, totaling to over half a billion in disclosed deal volume.
